Monetary policy · Lesson 1Lesson

How a central bank sets rates

A central bank doesn’t set your mortgage rate. It sets the policy rate, a target for what banks charge each other overnight, and the rates you borrow at follow it.

Raise it and borrowing costs more, so households and firms spend less, and prices rise more slowly.

The real thing, not a picture of it. Try it.

01

Check it yourself

A page chip after a sentence shows the quote it rests on. Tap it to open the page.

02

Trust, but verify

If a lesson says something your notes don’t, the missing citation shows it.

03

Revise from the source

Before an exam, go from the lesson straight to the slide it came from.
